Frequently Asked Questions

Q - Why would I consider enrolling for a half day course?

A - This type of natural stream installation is extremely rare. Information is almost non-existent. The guys at your local water feature shop will not give you the correct information and you can easily waste up to two thousand rand on the wrong materials. In addition, you will have the luxury of doing it right the first time - an important aspect as this project can be labour intensive depending on the contours of your garden.

Q - Will the stream not become smelly and attract mosquitoes?
A - No, not if the design principals demonstrated are followed.

Q - Surely the absence of concrete will make the water muddy, murky and unpleasant to look at?
A - No, the use of a natural filter ensures that the water is crystal clear, as you would expect to find in a mountain stream

Q - Will the natural stream make the same sound as the artificial water features at my local nursery?
A - The natural stream will have a soft gurgle as one hears next to any real stream but the harsh and intrusive sound of the concrete models is absent.

Q - I love the idea but we have a toddler that could fall in and drown.
A - This particular design does not feature a pond of any sort, nor any area where a child could drown. For the same reason this design cannot support fish of any kind

Q - Does the stream run 24 hours a day?
A - No. This would waste a lot of water, shorten the life-span of the pump and be detrimental to some of the plants surrounding the stream bed. Instead a timer switch is fitted with a manual override when you want to enjoy the stream for an extended period of time

Q - Rocks and stones are not included in the approximate cost of the project. Why is this?
A - Bought rocks from a nursery are expensive - so expensive as to make the project almost unaffordable. For this reason it is better to scavenge your own rocks from the countryside.

Q - I see old, leaking and unused water features everywhere. They are an eye sore!
A - They are. This particular design cannot "leak" and therefore should give years of enjoyment. However should you decide that it does not fit your lifestyle anymore it can be simply and inexpensively removed!

Q - What are the course details?
A - The course is approximately 4 hours long and costs R550-00 per person payable by cash or cheque (no credit cards) They are presented once or twice a month in the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg on a Saturday morning. Further details when booking. Click here to book or to make an enquiry.

Q - How long does it take to build?
A - The plants and wildlife are an important part of the stream's appeal. These aspects take a full year to establish. Therefore the stream can be leisurely built over a number of months on available weekends - this approach is recommended. This also makes the installation very affordable. If you are in a hurry however the entire project can be completed in four days with the assistance of one or two labourers assuming you have all the materials at hand.
